January – Working In The Garden Now

January Garden - What you can do now.

1 Now is a good time to apply lime to your lawn.
It is too early, however, to fertilize. Wait until you can see new growth forming.

2 Aerating your lawn and then applying 3/8” of coarse sand
will help improve drainage tremendously and will help in the overall health of your lawn.

3 Should you put lime on garden beds right now? Yes, but not on your potato patch!

4 Right now in January it is very important to clean up fruit trees,
roses and ornamentals and preventative spray them with Lime Sulphur and Dormant Oil.
*Lime sulphur and dormant oil should not be used on maples, nut trees or viburnums.
*Copper spray is best for peaches, nectarines and apricots.
Note: Lime sulphur and dormant oil are predominantly organic materials.

5 To prevent Peach Leaf Curl use copper spray on apples to prevent European canker and on peaches and nectarines to prevent leaf curl.

6 Can I prune now? Yes and no -begin pruning fruit, shade and evergreen trees, but not your early (before June) flowering trees and shrubs as they have already set bud and you would cut the flowers off.

7 January is not too early to start seeds. You can start early seeds like pansies, geraniums and giant onions. You can also start begonia tubers, but wait to plant other seeds until later in spring.

Long winters are made more enjoyable by planning your spring garden. Pansy, geranium, lobelia, begonia and coleus seeds should be planted now to give you an early showing of colour. Use grow lights, Jiffy pellets or a good starter mix in clean plastic flats for more expensive seeds. Once they have germinated, keep the seedlings cool; give them lots of light. Feed them with 0-12-12’ fertilizer to keep them compact and bushy until they are ready to be transplanted. Use copper spray to prevent damping off.

8 It is still too early to transplant houseplants right now? Wait until March to transplant houseplants.

Keep your houseplants on the dry side now and use ‘Oxygen Plus’ every time you water. Grow lights would be most helpful at this time of year too. Be sure to keep all your plants as humid as possible, and
keep an eye out for red spider mites and aphids. Combat them by misting
with water and insecticide soap respectively.
