Lets Plan to Get Our Hands Dirty This Year.

By Teresa Scarr

Lets Plan to Get Our Hands Dirty This Year.

You don’t need a Green Thumb to get huge returns from small scale gardening. Transform patios, balconies, courtyards and small patches in the flower garden with food for your family.

Start small to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Learn as you go what works for you in your space. Remember available light and space is very important to your success. You will need at least six hours of sun per day in the spaces you choose.

Container gardening is very popular and can be very rewarding in both yield and satisfaction. Before you say you don’t have anywhere to grow food check around and see where you could put some large containers in your outdoor space. The size of the container is important for plant growth. Choose containers that are at least one foot by one foot for proper root growth mix up the shapes and sizes. Consider pots of herbs on your stair steps or window gardens. Think vertical where ever possible using a retaining wall or fence to grow beans and cucumbers.

I challenge everyone to grow their own salads this year and it’s time to plan, make or buy the containers for your small spaces.

Good information for these trying times, Teresa. Many people aren't aware of how much they can grow in a small space.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.

For the first time in 3 years we have a garden. I can't wait for Spring to arrive so that we can plant things.

I love your attitude - fresh air and fresh food.

This is the first time I have had a backyard to plant and I am having so much fun with it. However, even in upstairs apartments I have always had lots of indoor plant, particularly herbs and salad greens. I love eating my own homegrown organic produce!
